In the ever-evolving landscape of hip-hop, the resurgence of boom bap beats has created a bridge between the classics and the contemporary. At the forefront of this revival is Cordae, a young artist who embodies the spirit of the ’90s while appealing to today’s listeners. Through his distinct style and lyrical depth, Cordae not only honors the greats before him but also carves out his own path in the industry.
A Journey Through Music
Hailing from Maryland, Cordae Dunston, known simply as Cordae, burst onto the scene with his mixtape “I’m So Anxious” in 2016, catching the attention of hip-hop aficionados with his authentic approach and storytelling prowess. Unlike many of his contemporaries who lean heavily on auto-tune and trap beats, Cordae’s music harkens back to the golden age of hip-hop, characterized by its raw lyricism and soulful samples.
Flawless Execution of Boom Bap
Cordae’s production choices often feature classic boom bap beats, characterized by their heavy drums and soulful melodies. Collaborating with producers who share his appreciation for this style, he manages to blend nostalgia with a modern flair that resonates with both older and newer audiences. Tracks like «Have Mercy» not only showcase his lyrical skill but also highlight the intricate production reminiscent of iconic artists like Nas and JAY-Z.
Lyrical Brilliance
Beyond production, Cordae’s lyrical content sets him apart. Tackling themes like identity, social issues, and personal experiences, he weaves intricate narratives that encourage introspection. This depth is palpable in songs such as «RNP» featuring Anderson .Paak, where the blend of catchy hooks and meaningful verses create a compelling listening experience that leaves audiences wanting more.
A Voice for the New Generation
As a voice for his generation, Cordae is not afraid to address contemporary issues. He embraces his platform to speak on matters of mental health, racial inequality, and the struggles faced by young people today. This willingness to authentically connect through his music allows him to stand out in a crowded genre, making him a relatable figure to both fans and peers alike.
Impact and Future
Cordae’s influence goes beyond music; he is an example for aspiring artists aiming to maintain authenticity while navigating the complexities of the industry. As he continues to push the boundaries of boom bap and infuse it with his own experiences, the future looks incredibly promising for him. With multiple Grammy nominations under his belt and a growing fanbase, Cordae is poised to lead the charge in bringing classic hip-hop sounds back to the forefront for a new generation.
